The only watches that function without a battery are mechanical watches, which include Automatic and Manual mechanical watch. A rotor in an automatic watch oscillates in response to the wearer’s natural movements, which causes the mainspring to twist.

According to the Swiss Federal Act on the Protection of Trademarks and Indications of Origin, the latest standards for Swiss-made watches are

The movement is cased in Switzerland
The movement is Swiss
The manufacturer carries out the final quality control checks in Switzerland and should be labeled “Swiss Made”.

For a “Swiss Made” watch, the production cost of the watch (as a whole) must be based in Switzerland and represent at least 60% of the total cost; however, in the case of a Swiss mechanical watch, at least 80% of the production cost should be related to the operations performed in Switzerland.

According to the different functions, there are three main types watch movements :mechanical watch movements, automatic watch movements and quartz watch movements.

A Swiss movement watch can be defined as a watch that has a movement mechanism that meets the criteria for the “Swiss Made” label set by the Swiss Federal Council. This includes the requirement that the movement is assembled in Switzerland and undergoes full quality control inspection by the manufacturer in Switzerland, and that at least 50% of the value of the watch’s movement components (not the entire watch) is derived from Swiss-made components.
