What plating is for our watches?
Many people wear their watches for a period, and they become faded or discoloured. Fading watches are usually not covered by warranty. Most people get angry and don’t understand why? That’s because they don’t understand the process of watch plating and the causes of watch dis colouration.
Watch plating plays a pivotal role in enhancing both the appearance and service life of a watch. In this article, we will delve into the plating process that we, as a China watch maker, use and the related parameters, among others.
WATCH PLATING MEANING
Vacuum ion plating is a process in which, after a layer of chemically stable titanium oxide is added to a watch accessory, it uses a high-energy ion source to speed up and bombard metal atoms or ions onto the surface of a conductor under vacuum conditions, resulting in a dense layer of metal. This process not only enhances the visual appeal of the watch but also provides additional protection against corrosion and wear. The watch parts plating includes cases, bezels, and straps. For these large accessories, we use our vacuum ion plating.
WATCH PLATING COLORS
The vacuum ion plating colors are gold, rose gold, black, silver, blue, rhodium, gunmetal, coffee, rainbow, etc.
Gold plating: Gold plating is the application of a thin layer of real gold to the surface of a watch. This plating is popular for its luxurious and classic look. The thickness of the gold plating varies and can affect cost and durability. Gold colour is further divided into 1N14, 2N18, 0.5N. Gold colour is further divided into 14K, 18K and 24K plating, according to its gold content.
The high-quality watches require 24K gold plating like titanium watches or stainless steel watches. Some cheap watch like alloy watch or gift watch prefer 14K gold plating. Some affordable watch prefer 18K gold plating.
Rhodium Plating is usually used with white gold or platinum to produce a mirror-like reflective effect. It is highly resistant to fading and corrosion, making it a popular choice for high-end watches.
Silver plating is the use of vacuum example plating to evenly coat the surface of watch parts with silver, which prevents corrosion and increases aesthetics.
Rhodium and silver plating colours are very close to each other, but rhodium is whiter.
Rose gold plating is to form a layer of rose gold color plating on the surface of watch parts in a vacuum environment, which can make the watch present a fashionable and beautiful pink rose color. The materials used for rose gold plating are alloys of gold, copper, titanium oxide, and chrome, which are widely used in the watch industry due to their fashionable and beautiful appearance, high corrosion resistance, and abrasion resistance.
Gunmetal plating is in a vacuum environment, through electroplating plating tin-nickel alloy, tin-cobalt alloy or nickel to get a gradual from light black to deep black are called gunmetal color, with a metallic luster of the color. Depending on the additive content of the gunmetal color, different shades of gunmetal color can be obtained.
How long does a gold watch last?
The life of gold plating watch is a common concern among consumers. The gold plating watch can last for over 2 years. If properly cared for, a gold plated watch can last over 5 years.
There are several factors that affect the lifespan of the gold plating, including the thickness of the gold plating, the wearer’s habits, and the level of maintenance.
Thickness of the gold plating: The durability of the gold plating depends on its thickness. Thicker micronized gold plating typically lasts longer than thinner flash gold plating.
Wear and tear: daily use causes Wear and tear of the gold plating, exposure to the elements, and contact with worn surfaces. The plating of a watch that is worn frequently will deteriorate at a faster rate than a watch that is worn occasionally.
Care: Proper care and maintenance can extend the life of a gold-plated watch. This includes regular cleaning, avoiding exposure to harsh chemicals, and properly storing your watch when not in use.
Of course, if you want to extend the life of your gold plated watch, contact us. We have other ways that cost little more, but can extend the life.
Why is my rose gold watch fading?
Since the rose gold case and metal band will be in direct contact with the human body, and the human body will sweat, or bathe without wiping the body dry, these liquids come into contact with the rose gold case and band, which will corrode the plating layer, resulting in color changes.
Do rose gold watch fade color?
Rose gold is the most unstable of all colors, in other words it changes color by environmental influences. But this change does not happen suddenly, but gradually. In this regard, we also have special ways to extend the life of rose gold color watches. If interested, please contact us.
